They are particularly prone to infection by both bacteria and fungi. Wound management in such scenarios is therefore challenging. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been found to be extremely effective in the treatment of such wounds. This article looks at three cases of traumatic wounds (two military wounds and one traumatic crush wound) and how the use of NPWT, particularly using a gauze-based system, has helped to optimise care.

Use of Multiple Adjunctive Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Modalities to Manage Diabetic Lower-Extremity Wounds

Objective: Various treatment options exist for wound healing; however, clinical assessment of the patient and the wound environment must be considered before determining an optimal wound treatment plan. Negative pressure wound therapy alone and/or with an instilled topical solution can be effective in adjunctive management of acute and chronic wounds. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has also been sho...

In clinical practice many wounds are slow to heal and difficult to manage. The recently introduced technique of topical negative pressure therapy (TNP) has been developed to try to overcome some of these difficulties. TNP applies a controlled negative pressure to the surface of a wound that has potential advantages for wound treatment and management. Although the concept itself, of using suctio...

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy – A Review of its Uses in Orthopaedic Trauma

The use of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) for complex and large wounds has increased in popularity over the past decade. Modern NPWT systems consisting of an open pore foam sponge, adhesive dressing and a vacuum pump producing negative pressure have been used as an adjunct to surgical debridement to treat tissue defects around open fractures and chronic, contaminated wounds. Other uses ...
